Florence & The Machine- Spectrum (Calvin Harris Remix)

For all those preparing their summer playlists: jackpot. This remix combines the talents of two extraordinary musicians and manages to showcase both of their strengths. Florence cannot be anything, but brilliant when there is a microphone placed in front of her while Calvin never fails to concoct riveting disco-y, electronic remixes that maintain an infectiously catchy sound. The single officially comes out July 8th, but we had to give y’all a preview.

“…as every colour illuminates / We are shining.”

Britney Spears- Til The World Ends Feat. Nicki Minaj & Ke$ha (Remix)

Interestingly, when mixing three partially annoying divas voices, the end result is not as irritating as you’d imagine, in fact, it’s pretty catchy - sans Ke$ha who is simply irredeemable as a human singer.

World- hold on.

The Bee Gees- Stayin’ Alive

It’s been a rough week for the disco era. It hasn’t seen this much damage since the closure of Studio 54, no? Despite the fact that this track possesses a slightly inappropriate title for an homage, any artist truly understands that the greatest attempt at immortality comes from their opus: their creative offspring. Thus, it is a testament to the Bee Gees and to Mr. Robin Gibb that this track remains relevant and influential.

Not to mention the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack….

The Fratellis- Chelsea Dagger

Maybe we can agree that John Terry is scum, but let’s just call this a win for England, shall we? Whatever your feelings toward the club today they thrashed a brutal German team in Germany, furthermore, leaving viewers with an immense case of schadenfreude especially for villainous sounding Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Tonight Germany will ironically be singing the Blues.

Donna Summer- I Feel Love

What an iconic sound. Obviously pioneering the ethereal vocals of the disco era is one thing, but employing a maverick like Giorgio Moroder is quite another. This track contains a plethora of elements to mark it ” ahead of its time.” The Guardian even hails it as shocking as the punk rock it chronologically paralleled in 1977 and goes on to suggest that this song alone would have been enough to cement Miss Summer’s contribution to the world of Pop, but she still went on to churn out hit after hit while defining the sound and culture of disco.

We still feel the love, Donna!

Santigold-Proud Mary (Creedence Clearwater Revival Cover)

Fancy some upbeat percussion? Santigold takes the classic- even antiquated lyrics- and places them over modern beatz with a hint of drum-n-bass maybe. Wonder if the kidz today will realize that “rolling rolling rolling on the river” means sailing through a body of water. Gotta love the primal sound, as if she’s wafting down the river on the hunt for Captain Kurtz.

Keep rollin, rollin, rollin…

The Civil Wars- Billie Jean (Michael Jackson Cover Live)

Ever imagined the MJ hit as a country ballad? Seems so kooky it might just make sense turning the pop smash into another tale about a scorned lover, which probably accounts for a solid amount of themes from country tracks.

“The lie becomes the Truth.”

Fiona Apple- Every Single Night

You’ve really gotta hand it to Miss Apple. Despite experiencing her greatest hit at such a young age, she keeps on making music, decent music too. Love her lo-fi approach here. She’s got the skillz (lyrically, musically, vocally) to pull this off.

“Every night’s a fight with my brain/ I just want to feel everything.”

Lana Del Rey-Blue Jeans Feat. Azealia Banks (Foster The People Remix)

Let this track act as a perfect summation of the last two years of culturally significant music. Del Rey, the bad girl “gangsta Nancy Sinatra” remixed by those indie kids with the pumped kicks who actually want to inflict violence on hipsters “you better run from gun” in addition to Miss Azealia, our favorite up and coming rapper, far filthier than anyone you’ve ever heard and don’t confuse her with Iggy Azaelia.

The best genes in music.

One Direction- What Makes You Beautiful

This is a tough one. By attempting to explore the end of culture phenomena that is One Direction, we are simultaneously promoting the one directional track that blatantly borrows from Grease’s Summer Lovin’ bass line. How can something so derivative still incite the urge to jump around happily? The best way to explain the success of a rubbish song like this is by quoting T.S Elliot describing television as simply “…a medium of entertainment which permits millions of people to listen to the same joke and the same time and yet remain lonesome.”

Could Elliot’s opus The Wasteland be a grand metaphor for the state of current music?
