Notorious B.I.G & Frank Sinatra- Juicy New York, New York

No one says it better or more concisely than Neo, “Whoa.” What a game, what a sequel, what a “tush” down (via Billy Crystal)! Let’s give it up for another fabulous Super Bowl and promise to never eat chicken wings for another 364 days.

After the rematch of all rematches, let us bask in the glory of this Giant performance.

DJ Earworm- United State of Pop (Make The World Go Boom)

It’s intense, it’s trashy, it’s your mash-up of the biggest pop hits of 2011! Since it’s nearly impossible to sum up the year in one post, let this mash-up be our lazy solution. Further intrigued by this subject? Look to the Guardian’s definition of the “New Boring” in music. Earworm has selected a fitting title considering the most common theme in pop music: dance until the world ends, or as the master Worm explains himself, these are “Songs of regret and anger and perseverance, and lots of fire.”

Happy knew yur!

DJ Zebra- Come Closer Together (Nine Inch Nails versus The Beatles)

Hearing this for the first time over five years ago was one of those moments when you realize the potential of the mashup. It’s a new song made up of old songs, as obvious as it sounds, but so many attempts pale into comparison to the sheer innovation present here. Moreover, it’s even arguable that this track explores the origins of alternative rock by juxtaposing the master and the apprentice.

Few mashups come closer (together).

Florence + The Machine vs Mobb Deep- Shook It Out

Shake it out to this mash-up! Or wait, don’t, it’s Thanksgiving, move as little as possible! But post gluttony (tomorrow) it’s time to shake ya tail feathaa and forget about indulging- until New Years…

Happy Tryptophan!

Dreadlock Holiday- Independent Women Pt. 1 Acapella

Way to make this song more tolerable! We could never take this song seriously after the lyric, “The rap I’m rappin’ (I bought it),” because such blatant bragging about not writing your own music does not deserve my enthused hip shaking. That said, let us mourn the loss of CBS’s Charlie’s Angels after only…3 episodes?

Throw your hands up at me.

Daft Punk- Fall (M83 v.s Black Delta Remix)

Mash-up within a remix, beautiful.  This madness that could only fall upon the electronic shoulders of a Daft Punk track.  The Tron soundtrack (where this track originates) alone made us want to run until “my muscles burned and my veins pumped battery acid,” as Fight Club so eloquently describes.  So it comes as no surprise that “Fall”, when remixed, kicks ass. Moreover, this couldn’t have been more perfectly used for the agitating, pulsating, and enthralling action occurring in the trailer.

The gravity of this one is truly powerful.

Jay-Z- Run This Town Feat Rihanna & E.S Posthumus

What a perfectly profound piece.  The sound mirrors the bravado of Jay-Z.  It’s an entirely more appropriate sound for him to rap over.  The music sounds menacing, suspenseful even (ideal to cue the return of NFL games after the break, no?).  If the song were to be turned into a film, this would be the perfect single to accompany the trailer.

How many times can someone try to Run This Town with this cover?

Jay-Z- Run This Town Feat. Rihanna versus Sebastian Bach

It really shouldn’t be this hard  a mainstream track to be remixed with a classical piece. Anyone remember the success of A Fifth of Beethoven on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack?

Groovy.

Steve Forrest v.s Marilyn Monroe- I Wanna Be Loved By You

Loving this one.  Mash-ups should be more oriented toward this classic sound.  Guess, it’s true in music too-

Some like it hot.
