                               The Who has come so close to immortalizing Lilwhy and the important work we do here- just one “Y” away from perfection. Alas, we’ll have to settle for this fun lil ditty about the glories of vintage pornography, but who doesn’t love a good pin up girl? No complaints though. The Who is the Who is The Who is the who’s on first then? But seriously, there’s no greater honor than observing and hearing a dreamy 60s lead singer croon your name. It must be reminiscent to Juliet’s reaction to Romeo’s “a rose by any other name..”

A Tribe Called Quest- Can I Kick It?

Confession time: this song is the reason we were introduced to Lou Reed. Is that shameful or a modern way of discovering the most quintessential music? At least Tribe still fits into the classic shelf of our i-tunes library. This song truly initiated the word “kick” into our vocabulary. We kick it wearing kicks all the time now, but more importantly, this track most certainly paved the way for Obama’s key slogan with a slight alteration from 2nd to 1st person plural…can I kick it?

YES YOU CAN.

Fallen Angel- Sexy Boy (Air Cover)

At first we thought this was a cover of the Air track by a wannabe emo band, then we thought it was used in a Victoria’s Secret Commercial, then we thought we needed to do some wiki-ing fact checking. To say we misunderstood is a D sized understatement. This, instead, is a thoughtful cover by a orchestra/choir combo and composed by long time Air collaborator, Robert Neil. Also this was used in a Lynx commercial (and Axe in the US) with bra-clad girls in angel wings, so maybe that mistake was warranted. Adding violins to an Air song should be done more often. The soothing tones work perfectly with the pristine instrument.

A breath of fresh air, really.

Amy Winehouse- Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (The Shirelles Cover)

After the numerous tributes to Amy Winehouse, which cliche is there left to share? This is a “tragic loss” for the musical community? Another sad “addition to the 27 club?” A tasteless joke connecting the biographic nature of her hit single “Rehab” to her life?  Or a critique of the strange obsession people seem to have over the aura of celebrity, even more enhanced by an untimely death. Whichever you choose, it’s a terrible shame to have lost such a unique voice, further displayed with this brilliant cover.

To answer the question the Shirelles posed decades ago in regards to Amy:

The Morning Benders- I Wanna Be Like You (The Jungle Book Cover)

What a surprisingly unique cover!  Who knew it could be so deliciously fun to hear a childhood classic with an edge?  The guitar is definitely a bit more sinister, but this cover still maintains enough of the percussion from the original to keep 5 year-old you pleased.  A triumph, Morning Benders!

Fresh from France- an 80s cover band specifying in classic film theme songs!  Who knew the lyrics from everyone’s favorite motivational dance hit were so lovely. Good one, Irene Cara!
