Bob Dylan- Masters Of War

If there was ever a better written vituperative track, please do let us know because we haven’t heard anything to match the invective evidenced here. Moreover, this song hasn’t aged whatsoever. The litmus test of a classic? Students have still been questioned for playing this one at schools, if Greenday covered this (oy don’t get any ideas) their fans would believe this was written recently, although protest songs were much more fun during the Bush Rove/Cheney administration.

“Is your money that good? / Could it buy you forgiveness? / Do you think that it could? / I think you will find / when your death takes its toll / all the money you made / will never buy back your soul.”

Bob Dylan- Desolation Row

Sometimes the world grows surreal, and you don’t know why. Yesterday’s masterpiece by Radiohead can only be topped by the opus of Sir Dylan, who can always empathize with those who feel out of place, lonely, and queer. For true Surrealism see Ballad of a Thin Man. For peculiar melancholy and disorientation of the world, see Desolation Row. Some people quote the Bible, Lilwhy quotes the true master, “Right now I can’t read too good / Don’t send me no more letters, no/ Not unless you mail them from / Desolation Row.”

Sometimes there’s nothing more consoling than Desolation.

Bob Dylan- With God On Our Side

For Hitch- in the hopes that this ironic piece by an iconic artist would have amused him. “When sorrows come, they come not in single spies, but in battalions.” We’ll never hope to be of your caliber in words or politics, but we can only hope to do your life minute tribute with this insignificant blog post.

Give em hell Hitch (or Heaven, or nought?).

Charlotte Gainsbourg & Calexico- Just Like A Woman (Bob Dylan Cover)

What a perfect collabro-cover.  While the Dylan classic remains nearly untouchable as a legend, Gainsbourg’s vocals soften the diamond in the rough that is Dylan and his raspy tones. Calexico helps the listener hear this song for the lullaby it probably once was to a poor, young girl/fictional character/ Edie Segewick(??). The difference here is that this is sung just like a woman.

Hello, meta….

Phoenix- Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands (Bob Dylan Cover)

For Dylan novices this is an ideal way to ease into the genius.  This cover isn’t drastically different than the original, but the vocals of Thomas Mars are surely more soothing than Dylan’s raspy signature (to the untrained ear at least).

Still, no sad eyez here.

Bob Dylan- It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)

It’s alright, Bob (I’m only believing these are the best lyrics ever composed).

Bloody brilliant.
