Emily Wells- Juicy (The Notorious B.I.G Cover)

How creepily perfect is this interpretation of the Biggie classic? A pop hit gone the eerie way of Jem: sexy and uncanny. It’s especially important express an opinion- musically, that is- when covering a track that is a) a massive hit and b) the work of a legend otherwise the artist risk simply performing a song that pales in comparison. Emily Wells certainly re-interprets this song bravely, removing the beats, poppy sample, fast-paced style inherent in “rap”, and replacing these things with slow percussion and peculiarly beautiful vocals.

“And if ya don’t know, now ya know.”

Notorious B.I.G & Frank Sinatra- Juicy New York, New York

No one says it better or more concisely than Neo, “Whoa.” What a game, what a sequel, what a “tush” down (via Billy Crystal)! Let’s give it up for another fabulous Super Bowl and promise to never eat chicken wings for another 364 days.

After the rematch of all rematches, let us bask in the glory of this Giant performance.

The Notorious B.I.G- Suicidal Thoughts

This track off the immeasurably brilliant, Ready To Die, proves a belief we’ve upheld for a while: music is a source of connection. Biggie vulnerably confesses to all the crimes he knows he’s committed, things he may have done wrong, and even admits to the universal fear of belonging and being loved. You certainly don’t have to be a crack dealer to relate to the speculation of the world without you and his sentiment reaches far beyond the environs of Brookyln. It’s frighteningly typical to wonder about the attendance of your funeral, to think about your impact or lack thereof on all you know, so much so that Biggie has left us with this cathartic exploration of his inner demons.

“When I die fuck it I wanna go to hell…”

Wait What- Islands Is The Limit (The Notorious B.I.G v.s The XX)

Wait what? How cool have mash-ups become in the last year?  The notion “unlikely duo” seems to be a necessity for a supremely unique track.

Well done, DJs.
